Jane is a cat person, though we won’t hold it against her, and somehow a weather-forecasting cat in Indiana whom she’s never met was apparently more noteworthy than the addition of a 100-plus pound dog to her home. (Jane does regret not first mentioning her new family member, a Great Dane named Gus, and hopes he doesn’t read this. (I’ll wait while you Google it.) Betty has charmed the internet, and made the constant news watching during 2020 a bit more manageable. Jane, our Marketing and Development Coordinator, calls out the fantastic viral sensations that have come out of the work-from-home world we live in, among them Betty the Weather Cat. It’s been quite a year to learn on my feet! While that came with deep sorrow for Kim’s well-deserved retirement, I’ve appreciated the opportunity to grow into a new role. One of my personal positives this year was a promotion to Assistant Director for the library.

That being said, it’s important we try to find the silver linings where we can. Some of us, myself included, have had some positives come from this year, though it is hard to fully appreciate them with the shadow of death and oppression looming around the edges. From racial injustice to COVID-19 to a contentious election, this year has been tough to take. It’s a truth universally acknowledged that 2020 was a rough year.
